Bad Gums Can Make Him Go Flop

Bad gums is a turn off. It’s unsightly and it smells, and kills a date faster than you can say ‘yuck!’ But on a man, it’s a double whammy. According to a recent study in the UK, bad gums can make him go flop too, so if your man has been laid back about brushing his teeth, this should make him sit up – literally!

This study, announced by the British Dental Health Foundation and which was carried out on 70 willing men, showed that erectile dysfunction – his ability to get up and stay ‘attentive’ – could be linked to gum disease. The researchers noticed that as the severity of erectile dysfunction increased, so did the prevalence of chronic periodontitis (gum disease). More than four out of five men (81.8%) with severe erectile dysfunction had gum disease, while in cases of mild erectile dysfunction, the incidence of gum disease was less than two in five men. (Apparently, one in 10 guys tend to go flop, and  mostly those over 43 years old.)

“It is a well-known fact that gum disease has been linked to many conditions in the past that can have a detrimental effect on your general health such as heart disease and diabetes. When people have gum disease, bacteria from the mouth can get into their bloodstream, so it should therefore come as no surprise that this piece of research has linked vascular erectile dysfunction, another cardiac-related condition, with gum disease,” says Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter.

So the next time your guy takes his dental health lightly, tell him to brush and floss before it all goes ‘ker-plop’! And even if it doesn’t, who wants to kiss gum disease?
