Christmas Notebook – Cosy Christmas Meals

Where to go for the Christmas feast? These places caught our eye….

We like Novus’ romantic yet fun festive feasting Novus this Christmas Eve. Opulent and elegant,  this restaurant at the National Museum is serving up a classic set menu ($88) where desserts is abundance is the highlight! After a starters of French Onion Soup and mains of honey baked ham in crisp puff pastry or beef tenderloin to share, the meals proceeds on to a buffet of over 20 sweet treats, complete with live cooking stations. Load up on Christmas pudding, coconut cake, cherry clafoutis, carrot cake, mini molten chocolate cakes, citrus cones, coffee tartlet, mango panna cotta, strawberry tree, mini red velvet cupcakes and more.

Eat well but with care at Pantry at The Stables. Instead of heaving out a massive buffet, they are going small and discerning with a special la carte brunch from 24 – 26 December. So nice to celebrate the season lazily with a late morning meal. Honey and Marmalade Glazed Gammon Ham ($35++) accompanied with leek and potato gratin, pearl onions and bacon, Roasted Poussin ($30++) with fine beans and rosemary gremolata, Caramelized Banana and Gingerbread Spice Pancakes ($16++) served with berries and maple syrup and Plum Pudding ($14++) with rum and raisin ice cream. Take your pick or take them all!

At the Boathouse just opposite the One Fullerton, Christmas Eve is all about mod French in a cosy setting. Head Chef Jonathan Koh rolls out a sinful four-course dinner menu which we like! It starts with Lobster Royale with Langue De Oursin, Golden Jelly & Oscietra caviar,  then Roasted Hokkaido scallops with Gillardeau oyster crust, braised baby leeks & fennel emulsion, and main course of Braised Knuckle of Berkshire Pork with Glazed Prunes, Nantes Carrots a la Vichy and Spicy Jus. Yums ($128++).

At superluxe St Regis Singapore, the Brasserie Les Saveurs pulls out all the stops with a festive Christmas Day Degustation Champagne Brunch with Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut champagne. As live jazz plays, pick on antipastos and fresh seafood on ice served at your table. The move on to the degustation menu: egg with French caviar and finger toast, seared foie gras served with pumpkin, root vegetables, duck jus, Poached John Dory in Beurre Blanc sauce, zucchini and tomatoe. And we haven’t gotten to the main courses yet! Make room for turkey, beef of Welsh lamb for your main course, served with garden vegetables and winter black truffle¸ before indulging in an array of traditional Christmas desserts loved the world over. Roll home in an overstuffed stupor after that. ($158++, or $188++ with bubbly; 12pm – 3pm)

We love Osia, the mod Aussie restaurant at Resorts World Sentosa by celeb chef Scott Webster, and helmed by golden boy Chef de Cuisine Douglas Tay. A restaurant that never fails to impress with their food, price and basically everything else, Osia is serving up The Golden Goose this Christmas. No feathered bundle, it’s a  five-course set menu served on Christmas Eve and Christmas, featuring dishes like Lamb Saddle and Shoulder with Creamed Smoked Eggplant, Dukkah Spice, Puffed Barley and Roasted Garlic Jus and Gingerbread Spiced Foie Gras ‘Brix’ with Berries Compote, Hazelnut Sponge Toast. $200++ per person, and also available on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day at 210++ per person.

Newcomer Keystone – a modern Euro restaurant in the financial district which has already built itself a reputation for good, trendsetting food – is rolling out a five-course Christmas degustation at $138++ per person with a glass of champers. Bound to intrigue, the menu features funky flavours like foie gras au torchon with gingerbread crust and toffee macadamia, Blackmore Shepherd’s Pie of wagyu and heirloom baby veg, and dessert White Christmas  with aniseed macaroon and coconut mousse. Expect flamboyant touches as Chef de Cuisine Mark Richards likes to sous-vide, spherificate and dehydrate!

There’s nothing quite like a magical vibes of Halia in the evening, set in the tropical lushness of our Botanical Gardens. Newly refurbished, it should be even better this time. We think it’ll be a truly cosy festive dinner here, with their three-course set menu featuring signature dishes. At $128++, pick from Crystal bay king prawn cocktail, beetroot mango salad and calypso sauce, honey-baked Kurobuta ham, shaved fresh chestnut and caramelised fig, roast turkey supreme, apricot and raisin turkey roulade, potato puree with buttered brussels sprout and red currant jus and a soufflé with white chocolate, cinammon and nutmeg, salted caramel ice cream, amongst others. Add $40 for three glasses of paired wines.

For a festive high without bleeding your bank account, head up 70-plus floors to the Equinox Complex at Swissotel The Stamford, and beeline to Jaan for a yuletide lunch. Available from now until 24 Dec, its five-course lunch by Chef De Cuisine, Julien Royer, serves up rather surprising creations, like spanner crab with kohlrabi, Bergamot, radish, Aquitaine caviar; foie gras  with chestnut honey glaze, confit chioggia beetroot and pomegranate and seabass with black trumpets, gnocchi, marron crayfish jus. $136++ with a glass of champagne. Also absolutely need to know, Introbar on the first floor of the Equinox Complex, is bringing back its fantastic deal of $75++ for a bottle of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial from 25 – 31 December.
