Club Med – Swish and Swinging at 60

I can understand if a 60 year old needs a bit of a face lift. Every one could do with a discerning bit of help. The point is, is it done well? Club Med, the brand, has just past her 60 year old mark, and she’s still looking pretty good, especially if you potter over to Club Med Kani in Maldives.  See the pretty picture! I want to be there too, please!

Bubbly By The Sea

Just 20 km from Male on the island of Kanifinholu, this resort is absolute lusciousness which doles out the good and lazy life in gobs. Stay in their out-of-this-world on-the-water lagoon suites, stroll along the pristine beach, commune with the fishes, laze in the sparkling lagoon or read a book in the sun. Be as vegetative as you want or go active with all sorts of water activities like diving, snorkeling, island hopping and trekking with adrenaline-filled GOs.

There are superior rooms all nicely refurbished, and four new beach villas for the 4T resort guests. But clearly, the jewel in the crown is the resort’s swoon-worthy 5-Trident (that means a higher level of luxe) 75 swish lagoon suites with private terrace, huge bathrooms, bath tub with a view, and breakfast room service. It also gives you access to the new Manta Lounge, a tropical uber-luxe space for luxury timeout. A circular place also above the water, you can drink in the 360-degree view while sipping on Champers as you laze in the daybeds, or commune with nature in style, languishing on the catamaran nettings and watching the colourful fish below. (All say after me now… “Ooooo!”) Is that heaven or is that heaven? Not enough pampering? The concierge will book you a spa treatment if you like at the Club Med Spa by Mandara, arrange for your fave dish at the Kandu Specialty Restaurant or arrange a romantic dinner for two under the stars in some nice spot in the resort. Oh yes, and need to know facts: bubbly (not fizzy, darling!) is served 6pm – 8pm at Manta Lounge every day, and beyond that, necessary drinky-poos and munchies are available at the self service bar from 7.30pm till 11pm. Nice!

Snow, Snacks and Ski

If you don’t like sand in your bikini bottom though, how about snow? Take it all the way at Club Med’s newest and first snow resort, Club Med Yabuli in China’s Heilongjiang region, 470m above the sea and surrounded by pine-forested National Park. The ski season is from mid-November to early April and according to a friend who was there a month ago, it’s pretty chilly, to say the least! Snow queens can look forward 30 km of trail for all levels, the longest mountain trail in China, heated gondola and six-passenger chairlift that takes you from the resort centre to mid mountain and mountain top. If you’re a Ski Virgin like moi, thank goodness the outfits wrap you up till you are unrecognizable! No room for sophistication if you’re on the bunny slopes, but at least there’ll be ski instructors to teach you on the largest beginner teaching terrain in the country, connected by five ‘magic carpet’ surface lifts that are easier for beginners to manage. It’s a ski-in, ski-out resort so the action is right at your doorstep, and when you’re tired of skiing, there’s ice skating, tubing and sleigh rides too.

How about après ski? Club Med Yabuli offers a spa to knead your tired bones, indoor pool, and activities like flying trapeze, bungee bounce, dance classes, billiards, etc. But no need for more physical exertion. I can imagine I’d rather make a beeline to the food and drink and chill out. Like with all Club Med properties, this has a ‘bar and snacking concept’ which means unlimited drinks (including the alcy) and specialty snacks served whenever you like.

All Inclusive Holidays

Undeniably, one of the most attractive value-adds about a Club Med holiday across all its properties is its all-inclusive nature. Everything is sorted out for you, from transport and transfers to food, activities, etc…even baby food, strollers and diapers are there, even kid’s programmes to keep your bambinos (from two- to 17-year-olds!) busy and out of your hair. No need for guilt, too, sweeties, ‘cos the kids are kept happy and honestly, sometimes, we do cramp their style.  Best thing is, there’s usually no ‘hidden costs’, so a package with Yabuli would also include ski passes and ski school.
