Dinner In An Old Ammunitions Bunker?
Fancy dining in a former ammunition store? Heritage and military history come together at AMMO, the new restaurant and bar which recently opened at the new Asia Society Hong Kong Center in Admiralty. The Society together with AMMO is located in a former explosives magazine compound created by the British army in the mid-19th century and which has stood empty since the 1980s – until now.
Head to this unique setting and imbibe on mod Continental cuisine with an Asian touch. Pick on signature starters like Slow Cooked Egg with Toro, Sea Urchin and Roman Zucchini Sauce (HK$138) and Quail Salad with Grapes and Pancetta (HK$138). Pastas are a mainstay with them, with creative, carb-happy dishes like Angel Hair with uni (HK$198), Gnocchi with Braised Angus Oxtail, Sorrento Lemon Zest and Cocoa Powder (HK$138) and Homemade Tagliolini with Tomato Sauce (HK$88).
With over 300 wines on the list, martini menu and signature sangria, there’s just got to be nibbles too. What’s up, tapas? How about Cuttlefish Cappuccino, Pata Negra ham croquette, Langoustine wrapped in Vietnamese Rice paper and basil, Cantabrico Anchovies on Alta Mura Bread and Oxtail Meatballs with peanuts and cocao powder. Nice and quirky.
It may have been a military bunker yonks ago, but it’s since been transformed into a glammy, theatrical space. The central feature is a set of three sculptural spiral staircases constructed as chandeliers out of copper plumbing pipes and cascading from the six-meter high ceiling; a copper mural wall behind the bar, grand floor to ceiling windows to let in lush greenery.
Helmed by celebrity chef and restaurateur Tony Cheng, whose restaurant group also owns The Drawing Room, word has it that you gotta make your reservations about two weeks in advance.
AMMO serves an all-day menu from 11.30 am to 12am. and offers set lunches, tapas at cocktail hour, and dinner.
