Luxury Adventures To The Sea of Cortés

We’re constantly looking for destinations off-the-beaten path for a good holiday, aren’t we? That’s why whenever I see anything along these lines, I can’t help sharing the news. Here’s something funky which I would love to do someday….

American Safari Cruises, a luxury yacht cruise operator based in Seattle USA, is offering holiday-makers weeklong adventures to Baja Mexico’s Sea of Cortés. What’s that? Well, it’s on the other side of the globe for us and a protected ‘UNESCO World Heritage biosphere reserve’ with plenty of marine life and wilderness to see and watery things to do.

The cruise takes place on a 22-guest upscale yacht Safari Quest which sails from the pretty town of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico from November through April next year. Expect to cruise through islands and islets in the Sea of Cortes’ which John Steinbeck found “ferocious with life” and described by Jacques Cousteau as “the aquarium of the world.”  The cruising is flexible and unhurried, giving you lots of opportunity to gawk leisurely at all creatures weird and wonderful including whales, dolphins and sea lions.

Anchoring in quiet coves, the yacht transforms into a waterborne adventure platform for kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, sailing, skiff rides, snorkeling, swimming, swinging off the rope swing and tubing. Expert naturalists lead kayaking and hiking excursions to explore the sea, coastline and even into the desert to see giant Cardón cacti, red rock cliffs and white sand dunes.

Get off the yacht and tour Isla Partida, Isla San Jose, Isla San Francisco and Isla Espíritu Santo. Experiences are unique. At Bahia Agua Verde, take a mule ride into the arroyos of the peninsula guided by a local ranchero. Meet the Cuevas fishing family and tour the village and whale bone yard at Isla Coyote, and snorkel with sea lions at Los Islotes.

Despite the adventuring, you’ll be retiring back to your swanky yacht accommodation with hot tub, Tempur-pedic mattresses, heated tile floors in all bathrooms and upper category balconies. The guest-crew ratio of 2 to 1 is indulgent, and the fare – from $3,995 per person – includes everything from meals to transfers, taxes to equipment. Leaves you nothing more to ask for except a plane ticket.

Good to know: On 13 selected departures, each guest get a $200 travel credit which they can use on rooms or private charter for a ‘family or group getaway’ if you book by 30 Setpember. The departure dates are:  November 26; December 24, 31; January 14, 28; February 4, 11, 18; March 3, 17, 24, 31; April 7. Departures on 24 and 31 December also gives teens a $400 credit.
