Michelin Must-Gos in Hong Kong

On my wish list of “to-eat-ats” for 2011 are 3 restaurants that have just happily earned their Michelin stars for the year. So if you find yourself over the festive holidays in the city that never sleeps, with deep pockets and fresh off the boat counting your winnings from the casino strip in Macau then spend your mula and indulge those cravings at:

CEPAGE in Wanchai at 23 Wing Fung Street (Tel: +852 28613130). The fashionable gastro-restaurant earns one star for the second year running the in Hong Kong and Macau Michelin Guide for 2011. The restaurant is part of Singapore’s Les Amis Group and wins for ‘stylish design” which blends old world opulence and European architecture inspired  by an 18th century French villa with modern elements. It also has been commended for its ‘wine list’ ranked amongst the finest and most impressive in Hong Kong. The guide shares that the “ “Three floors of stylish design offer the chic diner something special; sophisticated but also a relaxed atmosphere. The cuisine is contemporary French but with Asian touches and uses fine ingredients from around the world: fish is mostly from Japan; caviar from China and langoustine arrives from New Zealand.

CUISINE CUISINE at The Mira, 118 Nathan Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon (Tel: +852 2315 5222) and at 3101 Podium Level 3IFC Mall in Central (Tel: +852 2393 3933) led by Chef Yu has earned 2 Michelin Stars in the 2011 Guide for its modern Cantonese fare. The Guide heralded the “excellent cooking, worth a detour.” Apparently a restaurant that receives one or more stars is, according to the Michelin Guide, “not only one of the best in its country but also one of the best in the world.”

NAN HAI NO.1 also in Tsim Sha Tsui at the newly opened i-Square at 63 Nathan Road, Kowloon (Tel: +852 2487 3688) has also bagged its very first Michelin star. Only opened for 6 months, the restaurant has a sea themed design and serves superb contemporary Chinese cuisine with a wraparound spectacular view of the Hong Kong harbour and skyline from its 30th floor Eyebar, outdoor alfresco deck.

There are 13 new restaurants this year who have earned Michelin stars in Hong Kong. Check them out in the Guide, just out and available for HK$178 at major bookstores along with the 257 others that have already won stars.

How to read the guide:
One Star = very good restaurant in its category
Two Stars = excellent cooking, worth a detour
Three Stars = Exceptional Cuisine worth a special journey
