New (Low Guilt) Ice Creameries In Town

Here’s an angelic way to deal with sinful snacking…..We like Cold Stone Creamery’s style of mixing calories and charity, and take the edge (or shall I say curves) out of the excess fat.

As part of the official opening of its first store in Singapore, Cold Stone Creamery is turning the event into a fund raiser for Make-A-Wish. This takes place this Saturday, 12 March at its outlet in Orchard Central between 1pm and 3pm.

Called The Ultimate Ice Cream FUN-draiser, part of the sales proceeds on that day will go to fulfil the wish of a special child under the Make-A-Wish programme. There’ll also be games, drum performances, ice cream giveaways and even a flash mob.

From America, what’s interesting about this ice creamery is that the staff sing, dance and do some ‘ice cream’ flaring along the way. And like many of the other swanky ice cream shops already in town, they do mix-ins on a frozen granite slab.

Just down the road at Wisma Atria is another brand of icy indulgence – Sour Sally. It’s a relatively new frozen yoghurt joint recognizable by their stripey-stockinged, vaguely gothic-looking girl mascot which somehow reminds me of the daughter in the Adams Family. This new dessert joint serves up four flavours of nonfat yoghurt – melon mint, original, strawberry and green tea – from $3.50, and 24 types of toppings; Shaved Ice Escapade, a dessert  made up of smooth layers of shaved ice topped with yoghurt and three toppings (from $8.80) and a range of fruity smoothies ($5.90).

As modest as their offerings are, people who have tasted it swear by it – including Elaine. Apparently Sour Sally has a pretty devoted following among the folks in Indonesia too, so can’t be bad, I say.   If you’re venturing by with kid in tow, be warned of Sour Sally merchandising – dolls, T-shirts, shawls, stockings, EZLink card stickers, notebooks, Tote Bags and more. Sour Sally is an Indonesian brand, that makes use of US premium frozen yoghurt.
