Retro Flavours Of ‘60s and ‘70s Hong Kong
All things retro are coming back with a vengeance. Perhaps people are returning to their roots, or life is becoming such a complex place that we just hanker for the good old days when things were simpler and more laid back. I know I get my nostalgic moments more frequently these days….maybe it’s also age setting in, and I am beginning to sound like my mom and grandmother, starting every conversation with “In my time…..” (And I see my daughter yawn….!)
I am sure there are lots of us out there, including Hong Kong entrepreneur Steven Lo, producer of over 100 movies and chairman of Hong Kong’s South China Football Club, who is also a 1960s baby. He’s got fond memories of the early western style restaurants in Hong Kong and recently opened Loyal Dining, (pronounced in Cantonese as “Loi Lo”,) a retro eaterie which offers a taste of nostalgic 60s and 70s Hong Kong.
“The 60s and 70s were so meaningful for me and full of unforgettable memories that I would like to share with everyone. I wanted to create an environment for people my age to recall the sweet days of childhood, and to introduce this classic dining experience for the younger generation too,” said Steven Lo.
This four-storey restaurant on Wellington Street brings to mind colonial Hong Kong in the 60s and 70s when westerners arrived in droves, marking the advent of a distinctly Hong Kong style western restaurant. The reto décor is designed to reflect the bygone days of Hong Kong, filled with sepia toned images of those early days. Naturally, the menu at Loyal Dining consists of retro classics form that era – 66 Beef Wellington, Loyal Pigeon Simmered in Homemade Sweet Soya Sauce and Baked Lobster & Seafood with Fried Rice. The restaurant will also be the first and only place in Central to offer freshly made dim sum after hours, served from 10pm until 2am.
