Who Are You Calling ‘Auntie’?

While Singaporeans are passionately embroiled in election fever at the moment, and all of us hurtling headlong to the polls this Saturday, a most disturbing story was published earlier in the week where a collection of relatively young candidates were coined the ‘Auntie Killers’ (see picture above). Supposedly charming, good looking and with the ‘X factor’, these are apparently hotties among the aunties on the ground – described sweepingly as ‘women over 40′. See the mak cik in green as an example of ‘over 40 auntie’? Elaine and I are over 40, and loads of other fabulicious ladies I know are over 40. I guess that lumps us all as ’aunties’, too, together with Mak Cik,waiting to peck the cheeks of these men and offer them our latest attempt at mee siam, if they happen to cross our paths?

No, darling, ‘Auntie’ is your mom’s friend or your grandma’s BFF who wears knee-high 70 denier skin-coloured stockings and open toe sandals, and shuffles down the jogging track with her other BFF complaining loudly in Hokkien about the quality of pork at the market!

I grant that yes, there are some who go down the road of Auntiedom prematurely. But many over 40-year-old ladies I know are cougar material who love their martinis and …oops! dare I say….their Kate Spade’s too. (Quick quick! Lateral V-sign by the eyes!) And the only sort of  guy they’ll be compelled to hit on would be George Clooney. So who are you calling ‘Auntie’?  Time for an update in perception pur-leease!
