Saving Sendai

I had wanted to run a story this week about a lovely hotel package at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo which celebrates the centenary of Nihonbashi bridge. This is the spot from where all road distances between the capital and other points in Japan were to be measured – something which  apparently is still practised today. In early April, during cherry blossom season, there’s slated a few days of processions and parades  – Oedo Shu-un Matsuri (“Water Transportation Festival”) on 2 April featuring traditional Japanese boats,  and on 3 April, a grand processions to mark the anniversary of the Nihonbashi Bridge, featuring members of Kawagoehan Hinawajyuu Teppoutai Hozonkai (a preservation association of the historic Japanese samurai troops) dressed in traditional armour.

But with the triple disasters that shook Japan from last Friday, the mood is solemn and there is little cause for celebration. Instead, with the world coming together to help Japan, what became more appropriate is a listing of efforts around Singapore to raise funds for Japan’s disaster victims. So if you are still wondering what you can do….

Make reservations for dinner at Inagiku in Fairmont Hotel Singapore tomorrow evening, 20 March, for its Sunday for Sendai charity dinner where all proceeds from the evening goes to charity. Dinner starts from 5pm tomorrow, and all items on the Inagiku menu will be served as usual. Because it’s a charity dinner, no discounts, redemptions or promotions will be available that evening, with the only discount being the Grand Tour Tasting Menu (SGD180++ value) at SGD150++.

From the Singapore Chefs Association, the junior chefs’ arm of the association will be baking  and selling cookies to help raise funds for Japan. Each tub of Chocolate Cookies (approx 400g) goes at an easy $10. Make your orders by Wednesday, 23 March 2011. This fund Raising is proudly supported by Temasek Polytechnic, School of Applied Science (Dip in Baking & Culinary Science). Buy some and do some good. It’s hardly any effort on your part.

Aside from eating, how about stretching and burning some calories for a good cause? Updog Studio is organising a charity yoga class on Saturday, 26 March at 4pm. Anyone can come and take part in this one-hour, Hot 26 yoga class. All they ask for is at least $20 per person, but give more if you can afford to. All proceeds goes to The Japanese Association in collaboration with Singapore Red Cross Society. If you can’t make it for the class, you can still drop off donations at Updog Studio before 28 March. All cheques should be made payable to Singapore Red Cross Society.
