What To Eat In Hong Kong This Autumn
Foodies in Hong Kong – and those heading there – take note! Lots of great eats going on in Hong Kong, and here’s our update on the wonderful deals and meals that will be served in the coming weeks which are sealed with the SimplyFab stamp of approval!
For over-the-top opulence and indulgence, remember to coif your hair big and puffy, put on your best Versace and teeter to Michelin-starred CÉPAGE in Star Street, Wanchai, with your tai-tai friends. This fine dining destination will be featuring guest chef Armin Leitgeb who helms its sister restaurant in Singapore, the highly lauded Les Amis. (The latter has been listed on voted among the World’s Top 100 Restaurants for a number of years now, and is also recognised by the Miele guide among the very finest in Asia.) He’ll be in Hong Kong between 6-8 October, serving up special menus for dinner (HK$1,780) and lunch (HK$780, Oct 7 & 8 only). The 8-course dinner menu includes grilled Spanish octopus, caviar & blinis, and Alaskan king crab and avocado, lightly smoked eel ‘tiede’ with crispy pork croutons, char grilled Wagyu ‘Calotte de boeuf’ with truffled French fries. For the 4-course lunch, expect to see dishes like poached Maine lobster with chanterelle risotto, char-grilled Wagyu rib eye with Perigourdine sauce, and lemon tart dessert. Capacity is really small – less than 50 each meal – so make sure you book asap.

Good genuine deals always get my vote, so I just have to home in on 208 Duecento Otto, the award-winning Italian restaurant at Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan. It’s introducing good value set lunches: three courses for HK$158 and a fancier option, at $208, featuring its signature rustic Italian cuisine. Tuck into OssoBuco Pie – a slow braised veal shank that has fallen straight off the bone and into the crumbly puff pastry, spinach and ricotta dumplings, nutmeg, parsley and chicken broth, pasta specials and notable new items like the delicious Bistek Burger which combines Taleggio cheese. For its $208 menu, you’ll get choices like Dry Rubbed Lamb Rack – grilled polenta, caramelized garlic, salsa verde, Barbecued Hanging Steak accompanied by a rocket and horseradish sauce, marinated strawberries with mint, Sambuca Molinari and vanilla. Both menus, rotated fortnightly, will feature its pizzas and pastas too.

Here’s a nice place for mid-week chill session. Living Room, the greasily chic lounge at W Hotel in Kowloon, is serving Wine-Derlust every Wednesday 8pm to 10:30pm. For HK$238 per person, enjoy over 20 varieties of divine wine from all over the world (including France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, USA, South Africa), accompanied by AOC cheese galore, like Morbier Fermier, Tome d’Aquitaine, Reblochon from Savoie, Buche de Pussigny, British Stilton, Saint Marcelin, Comte et al. What makes it even more special is its gorgeous setting under its soaring nine-metre ceiling and great views of the city. Music comes from DJs, including Angus Wong, voted the best Hong Kong DJ by HK Magazine.

What to do on weekends? How about a high class barbecue in the sky? Harbour Grand Hong Kong’s Le 188° Restaurant & Lounge, with its stupendous view of Victoria Harbour from on high, will be serving up the first-ever BBQ in the Sky on weekends and public holidays. You can heave the kids too, as the restaurant is opening its doors to small people on this family occasion – nice and laudable. Sit at the garden area and pick your fave items – Oyster with Ponzu-onion Salsa, Tiger Prawns and Vegetable Skewers, Salmon Miso, Slipper Lobster and more. They’ll be prepared on the spot by the chefs. HK$388 per adult; HK$268 per child.
Over at the Harbour Grand Hong Kong’s Japanese restaurant Nagomi, beef is the flavour this autumn. All the way to October, feast on Australian Wagyu and US Angus beef done with Japanese influences. Muyst try’s are the Nagomi’s Wagyu Beef Burger Sushi roll which is mixed with black pepper, onion, egg, garlic, milk and breadcrumbs, then pan fried till golden and baked for 15 minutes, and finally rolled with cucumber and lettuce; Diced US Angus Beef Fillet with Garlic, US Angus Beef Tataki and Grilled Thin
Sliced Australian Wagyu Beef. Nice!
Over at Chinese restaurant Kwan Cheuk Heen, Shanghainese cuisine is the flavour for autumn. Bring grandma and tuck into 15 Shanghai dishes like river shrimps fried with spinach sauce or Hua Diao Chinese wine, and super comfort food, Braised Pork Belly (top picture) which is cooked for an hour until soft and tender, and having absorbed all the rich flavours of ginger, spring onion, Hua Diao, herbs and star anise!
