World Class Shows In Macau!
Cirque du Soleil is back with a newly revamped ‘ZAIA’ in Macau at The Venetian from 1 September. The story centres around a dream of a young girl (Zaia) who journeys into space on an adventurous voyage of self discovery. New characters and a diversified performance have been added to the plot which include a dazzling Hand to Hand act which requires the mastery of balance and control. There are new acrobatic elements involving roller skates passing through at a very high speed on a small table, also Asian elements like a Lion Dance have been added presumably to woo the Chinese audience. Then there is a juggling act where the jugglers in illuminated costumes show off their skills.
Zaia performances run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday through Sunday with this new performance starting 1 September. See here for show schedules: http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/zaia/tickets.aspx
Whilst in Macau, another show that you MUST NOT miss is the stunning and spectacular ‘HOUSE OF DANCING WATER’ by the world renowned Franco Dragone and brought in by Lawrence Ho (son of the great Stanley Ho, a.k.a Casino King). Put together at a cost of HK$2 billion (yes, you read right!) the show has run since September last year but has continually sold out each weekend. I caught the jaw dropping show two weekends ago in the City Of Dreams and I highly recommend that you get tickets on the internet in advance. It’s a water based show so try not to sit too near the front or you will get wet!
The show centres around an epic story about a magical kingdom where nature’s magic reigns and the good and evil factions war over a throne to that kingdom. There is a central love story which takes audiences through the heights and depths of human emotions and obviously concludes where love triumphs over hate and its sinister forces. A cast of 80 from swimmers to acrobats to stuntsmen on motorbikes make this a truly world class performance. Watch out for the stage that goes from a river where you can row a boat across to dry land where there are fight scenes and aerial stunts. This purpose built theater contains one of the most impressive commercial pools in the world, holding approximately 3.7 million gallons which is more than five Olympic-sized swimming pools, and is effectively one of the largest water-based theaters in the world.

And that’s not all because whilst you are there, you might as well make a date to see ‘ICE WORLD’ at The Venetian from now to 9 October. Built over 3 to 4 weeks, the carvers from Harbin in China worked in minus 15 degree cold conditions to construct various ice sculptures from about 9000 blocks of ice. Expect to see the Collosseum, Temple of Heaven, Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower and several other amazing intricately carved and lit ice sculptures. Entry is only 100MOP (which is about S$20) which includes a down coat rental. Wear long jeans and covered shoes and bring gloves if you plan to go because trust me – it IS an ice box inside. You can have a drink at the Ice Bar, the last stop before leaving the attraction and if you blood is frozen cold which mine almost was as after awhile I could not feel my fingers, you will most certainly need a warm drink outside after the experience.
